How to squirt during sex

Most women who squirt do it more easily from fingers or a toy than from penetrative sex. That is not a failure of anyone's technique; it is geometry. Squirting during sex is possible, but it asks for a specific angle, a steady rhythm, clitoral stimulation and a moment of real letting go. Here is how to stack the odds.

How to squirt during sex

Why squirting is harder during sex

Squirting usually follows firm, steady pressure on the front wall of the vagina, a few centimetres in, where the urethra, the Skene's glands and the inner clitoris sit close together. Fingers can press exactly there, at exactly the right angle, for as long as it takes. A penis mostly moves in and out along the length of the vagina, and in many positions it glides past the front wall rather than pressing into it.

There are three more reasons:

None of this means it cannot happen. It means that if your goal is squirting during sex, you prepare differently. If you have never squirted at all, start with how to squirt solo or with fingers first; it is far easier to find during sex once your body already knows the feeling.

Prepare: pee, towel, warm-up

  1. Pee first. Then the urge you feel later is the signal, not a full bladder. Research with ultrasound (Salama et al., 2015) shows the bladder fills during arousal and empties when women squirt, so the "I need to pee" feeling is real and expected.
  2. Towel down. A thick towel or waterproof blanket under her hips. If she is thinking about the mattress, she is not letting go.
  3. Long warm-up without penetration. Fifteen to twenty minutes of kissing, clitoral attention, and then fingers on the front wall with a slow "come here" motion.
  4. Wait for the urge, then switch. The best moment to move to penetration is when she already feels the fullness and the first hint of the pee urge from fingers. You are not starting from zero; you are carrying momentum into a new position.
Think of intercourse as the final five minutes of a thirty-minute session, not the whole session.

Positions that press the front wall

The question is not "which position is best for squirting" but "which angle points the penis at her front wall". These four do it, each with a different trade-off. Our full comparison is in the best squirting positions.

Tempo and depth: shorter, steadier, forward

This is where most attempts go wrong. Long, deep, fast thrusting feels great but misses the target: the sensitive front-wall zone sits in the first few centimetres, not at the back. What works instead:

Add a hand or toy on the clitoris

Most women who squirt describe front-wall pressure combined with clitoral stimulation, not one or the other. During sex that means a hand or a small vibrator on the clitoris at the same time. In her-on-top and edge-of-the-bed, either partner can do it; from behind, she usually reaches it herself. A small wand or a bullet is easier to keep in place than fingers. If adding a toy feels like admitting something, remember that this is the combination with the best track record.

The moment of letting go

When the urge to pee arrives, the body's reflex is to clench. Squirting means doing the opposite while a partner is inside, which is the single hardest part of doing it during sex. What helps:

  1. Say it. "I feel it" or an agreed word, so he knows to hold the rhythm exactly.
  2. Breathe out, long and slow. An exhale relaxes the pelvic floor; holding the breath tightens it.
  3. Bear down gently, as if starting to pee, while he keeps the same pressure. Some women release with him inside; many release the moment he slides out and keeps pressure on the vulva with his hand or body.
  4. Keep going lightly afterwards. A second wave is common.

For the full step-by-step on the release itself, including the solo version, see how to squirt.

For the partner: what to say, when to slow down

What if it does not happen?

Then you had sex with a long, attentive warm-up and a lot of front-wall pressure, which is not a bad outcome. Squirting during intercourse is genuinely the harder route, and not every woman squirts at all: in large surveys, 41% (Hensel et al., 2024) and 58% (Påfs, 2024) of women reported having done so. If you want to keep exploring, go back to fingers for a few sessions until the release is familiar, then try sex again with that memory in her body. If it is not happening by any route, why can't I squirt? walks through the nine most common blocks, and can all women squirt? explains why not squirting is normal.

Frequently asked questions

Can you squirt during sex?

Yes, but for most women it is harder than with fingers or a toy. It needs an angle that presses the front wall, a steady shallow rhythm, clitoral stimulation and letting go at the urge to pee.

Why is it easier to squirt from fingers than from penetration?

Fingers can press the sensitive front-wall zone, a few centimetres in, at exactly the right angle for as long as needed. In many positions a penis glides past that zone instead of pressing into it.

What is the best position to squirt during sex?

Her on top leaning back is the most reliable for many couples, because the angle tilts into the front wall and she controls depth and tempo. Hips raised on a pillow and the edge of the bed also work well.

How deep should he go?

Shallow. The sensitive zone is in the front third of the vagina. Short, forward, upward strokes or grinding work far better than deep thrusting.

Should she pee before sex if we want her to squirt?

Yes. It removes the worry that the fluid is urine from a full bladder, and the fluid that is released builds up during arousal anyway.

Do we need a toy?

No, but clitoral stimulation helps a lot, and a small vibrator is easier to keep in place during sex than a hand.

What should the partner do when she says she is close?

Keep the exact same rhythm, depth and pressure. Speeding up or going deeper at that moment is the most common way to lose it.

Can she squirt with the penis inside?

Some women do. Many release in the moment he slides out while pressure continues from a hand or body. Both are normal.

What if she does not squirt during sex?

That is common and says nothing about either of you. Go back to fingers until the release is familiar, then try again. Some women never squirt, which is normal too.

Is squirting during sex safe?

Yes for healthy adults. Use lube, avoid deep hard thrusting at steep angles, stop at any pain, and see a doctor for burning, blood or everyday leaking.
